Statewide, the field that provides wind turbines and substations is the third-largest in Louisiana, employing about 1,200 people, according to the study. In total, there are about 10,000 jobs in the state's offshore wind industry.
Louisiana is home to one of the biggest wind-power development projects in the country. It is a joint venture between DNB Group of Norway and Repower America, a company based in Texas.
Developed by DNB Group, it is located just off the coast of Lake Pontchartrain, north of New Orleans. The project has about 14 wind turbines on three of the bays closest to the coast.
Louisiana and DNB Group have an agreement for the project to invest up to $750 million in the plant and up to $25 million for each wind turbine installed.
The project would generate 1,300 megawatts of power — enough to power 400,000 homes.
According to the study, 6 in 10 (61 percent) jobs created by the offshore wind industry were in metro New Orleans. Also, half of the new jobs were in the energy sector, including jobs in engineering
